Ping Deng Wang, or King Ping Deng, resides in the Ninth Court of Di Yu (地狱 dì yù), where he passes judgement on the souls (魂 hún) that are brought to his domain.

The Ninth Court of Di Yu is located under the Wo Jiao Stone (沃焦石 wò jiāo shí) that marks southwest, which in-turn is located at the bottom of the Great Sea. The Ninth Court is said to stretch over 20,000 leagues, and has 16 additional "sub" Di Yu

As the Yama of the Ninth Court, Ping Deng Wang passes judgement on souls that have been sent to him by Qin Guang Wang (秦广王 qín guǎng wáng). These souls will have committed crimes of the following nature in their previous life on Earth - also known as the Yang Realm (阳间 yáng jiān):

1. A person who kills their father;

2. A person who kills their mother;

3. A person that kills a monk who has reached the status of Arahant;

4. A person that draws blood from a Buddha. Since Buudhas are no longer of this earth, this now refers to a person who destroys the likeness of a Buddha, Bodhisattva, Great Arahant, or other holy beings, or otherwise shows malice and hatred towards them;

5. A person that spreads rumors, meddles with right and wrong, causes disputes within a spiritual site or group, eventually causing the spiritual site or group to fall apart;

6. A person that eats food that belongs to monk for no other reason than greed;

Depending on the severity of each individual crime they committed, the soul will go through 1, many, or all of the 16 sub Di Yu that reside within the Ninth Court. Each of the 16 Di Yu are named after the torture method that is used within. The souls are tortured in each sub Di Yu for a period of time that the Yama judges to be necessary. Should they "die" during the process, or if they lose a limb for example, the soul will be "repaired" or "resurrected" again for the next round. And so on, and so forth

Below is the name of each sub Di Yu roughly translated, in chronological order:

1 Put simply, the Five Precepts are:

  1. No killing
  2. No stealing
  3. No adultery
  4. No lying
  5. No intoxication

2 A bhikkhunī is a fully ordained female monk in Buddhism

3 The Ten Evil Karmas include:

  1. killing
  2. stealing
  3. sexual misconduct
  4. false speech
  5. divisive speech
  6. abusive speech
  7. suggestive speech,
  8. greed
  9. anger
  10. the wrong views4

4 "the wrong view" is that false reality we invent and construct for ourselves based on our misinformed perception of everything. Wrong views, according to the Buddha, are the source of all harmful actions of our body, speech and mind that trap us in an endless cycle of suffering known as samsara.
